Look for ways to draw connections between your non-work experience and the job and industry at hand. For instance, if you are applying for an entry-level position in publishing, you might point out your strong grades in literature classes, volunteer work at the library or in literacy programs, an internship at a publishing house, your involvement with the school newspaper, etc.
Look at the specific skills mentioned in the job description, too, and think about ways to demonstrate that you possess these abilities. Tips for Writing an Entry-Level Cover Letter
Match your qualifications to the job. Research the job requirements thoroughly before beginning to compose your letter. Make a list of the key qualities, areas of knowledge, skills, or experience that the employer is seeking. Review descriptions for similar titles on Indeed.com or another job site if the employer hasn’t provided a good list of requirements with the ad.
Get inside information. Contact the career office at your school, if time permits, and request a list of alumni volunteers in your field of interest. Ask them what they would be looking for if they were hiring for the type of entry-level job which you are targeting.
Make a list of your qualifications. Compile a list of your assets that will enable you to meet the job requirements and excel in the job.
Write a perfect opening sentence. Compose an opening sentence that conveys enthusiasm for the job and summarizes why it is a good fit. Name the precise position if one is mentioned in the job announcement. For example, you might say “I am highly interested in consideration for your sales assistant vacancy since it would tap my strong customer service, organizational, and verbal communication skills.”
Describe your skills. Draft a sentence for each one of the assets on your list that will qualify you for the job. Briefly include a reference point in your background such as course project, leadership role, internship, or personal experience that proves that you possess that strength. You can merge more than one asset into each statement. For example, “I utilized strong persuasive skills and leadership ability to recruit and attract new members to our sorority.” Remember that for many entry-level jobs you will be trained on the job, so eagerness to learn and the ability to learn quickly and well are often assets to emphasize.
Quantify your accomplishments. Whenever possible, frame your statements as accomplishments and quantify results. For example, “Attentiveness to detail and editing skills enabled me to reduce publication errors in the yearbook by 15% over the previous year.”
When to mention following up. If you have identified a contact person and the employer has not conveyed how interviews will be arranged, then you might suggest that you will follow up to determine if they need further information and to discuss the possibility of arranging an interview.
End with a professional closing. In closing your cover letter, reaffirm your keen interest in the job and that you are hopeful that you can meet with them to discuss the exciting opportunity further.
Proofread your letter. Carefully review your letter for spelling and grammatical errors. Read it out loud and place your finger on each word. Have a counselor, teacher, writing tutor, or other trusted person critique your draft.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR POSITION: Louisville Orchestra
ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR POSITION
Job Summary: The Assistant Conductor shall be responsible for covering the LO Music Director and Guest Conductors for all services of the LO and conducting LO rehearsals and concerts as assigned. The Assistant Conductor serves as a community ambassador for the LO, and is a critical member of the team for planning and executing LO artistic, education and community engagement initiatives.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and study all scores for LO repertoire to ensure readiness to step in for the Music Director or a guest conductor in the event of illness, emergency or other circumstances that prevent their appearance.
- Cover all LO Classics Series and Music without Borders Series concerts. Conduct rehearsals and concerts (or portions there-of) of LO as assigned by Music Director (Pops, runouts, MakingMUSIC and other education-related concerts will be the most typical conducting assignments). Assistant Conductor should not expect to conduct Classics and Music Without Borders series concerts, especially not early in his/her tenure.
- Conduct all off-stage ensembles (“banda,” etc.) as required by repertory. Assist with choral warm up, pre- and/or post-rehearsal mini-rehearsals/coachings with players, soloists, as needed.
- Provide Music Director with written and verbal feedback on artistic matters relating to repertory (balance, intonation, dynamics, ensemble issues, etc.).
- Assist Music Director and General Manager in programming future LO seasons; specific accountabilities to include: set concert themes and determine repertoire for all educational concerts to meet school curriculum goals and maximize attendance; researching/evaluating potential guest artists, guest conductors, and composers; researching instrumentation needs; writing program outlines and/or scripts; artistic budget development support.
- Collaborate closely with the Education & Community Engagement Director in support of education and community engagement initiatives.
- Represent the LO in speaking engagements and other public relations activities as assigned by LO staff
- Actively support relationship building efforts with key community stakeholders, as guided by LO staff members.
- Serve on the Education & Community Engagement Committee of the Board of Directors and other committees/task forces as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Music Director or General Manager
- Bachelor’s Degree in music, conducting, or related field, and instrumental conducting training required
- Minimum 3 years equivalent experience required
- Complete knowledge of symphonic repertoire and experience in concert programming
- Ability to work flexible hours including, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Exceptional oral communication skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills

Candidates should submit a cover letter, current one-page resume, two letters of recommendation, and contact information for three professional references. Candidates are also required to submit a short 5’-7’ video sample demonstrating their recent work. This should include two contrasting repertoire styles. Video should be shot at close range of the conductor, taken from orchestra’s vantage point, facing the FRONT of the conductor, of either a rehearsal or performance with full symphonic or large chamber orchestral ensemble. Videos must be sent electronically with links and dates of performances (Dropbox, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
Finalists will be identified by February 17, 2017, and invited to audition live in front of the Louisville Orchestra and meet with the search committee on March 24, 2017. Travel, accommodations, meals, and all expenses related to the audition process are the sole responsibility of each candidate.
